Ayurvedic Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Ayurvedic Medicine For Joint Pain

In the current scenario of COVID-19, where most of us are forced to work from home, it can be tempting to spend whatever time we get to sit and relax on the couch. We might be living a sedentary lifestyle, wherein we are sitting, lying down and resting more than we are being active. This eventually will affect the health of our joints and increase our arthritis symptoms.

A joint is a part of the body where two or more bones meet to allow movement. When the range of movement is greater, the risk of injury is higher because the strength of the joint is reduced. Joint pain is caused by the wear and tear on the cartilage that protects and safeguards the joints.  Inflammation (pain and swelling), infection and injury are the common causes of joint pain.

SYMPTOMS AND RISK FACTORS

The common symptoms of Arthritis are joint pain and stiffness. Joint swelling and decreased range of movement are also present in many cases. No cure exists as it gradually worsens.

There are certain risk factors which are inevitable such as

  1. Heredity
  2. Age
  3. Gender
  4. Genetic factors

Only lifestyle changes like active life, eating right, maintaining healthy weights and effective treatments may help to prevent, improve joint function. Exercise plays an important role in slowing down the disease or preventing it.

Exercise helps to:

  1. Help maintain healthy joints.
  2. Relieve stiffness of joints.
  3. Reduces pain and fatigue.
  4. Increases muscle strength.
  5. Increase bone strength.

AYURVEDIC / HOME REMEDIES

Conventional treatments can help relieve joint pain but might not be a permanent cure. Here are some simple home remedies for quick relief:

  • Eucalyptus: The Eucalyptus oil relieves from the pain and swelling in the joints and at the same time its aroma has a calmative effect on the brain.
  • Ginger: Ginger known for its exceptional antiseptic properties helps reduce joint pain and swelling. It increases blood circulation. It also brings heat and healing properties to the affected areas. Drinking ginger tea or applying ginger paste on your joints helps.
  • Turmeric: Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric helps treat pain, inflammation and stiffness.
  • Heat therapy: Keeping a heating pad or hot water bottle up to 15-20 minutes or taking a warm shower or bath.
  • Therapeutic massage: Massage is given on the joints using herbal oils which provides significant relief from pain and swelling.

The above said quick remedies are for quick relief and not a permanent cure.

CONCLUSION

व्यायामात् लभते स्वास्थ्यं दीर्घायुष्यं बलं सुखं।

आरोग्यं परमं भाग्यं स्वास्थ्यं सर्वार्थसाधनम्॥

The above Sanskrit sloka says that exercising regularly results in good health, long life, strength and happiness. Good health is the greatest blessing.  Health is the means of everything.
