A beautiful skin is a commitment not a miracle” says Erno Lazlo, a pioneer in cosmetic dermatology.  Who does not want to look young and beautiful?  When you look at yourself in the mirror, don’t you want your skin to thank you for taking care of it. It is indeed right to state “Self-care starts with skin care”. Do you do? Well, you will have a glow and healthy complexion if you follow Ayurveda, the Science of Life. Not only that, you can certainly have an anti-ageing effect on your skin if you switch to Ayurveda. Ageing of your skin is something that can certainly be delayed when you switch to an ayurvedic regimen.

SKIN COLOUR AND COMPLEXION

What is the difference between skin colour and complexion? Melanin pigment is the main determinant of the skin colour. We mostly define the skin colour as fair and dark. Complexion and skin colour are often confused. Complexion is the amount of blood that flows to your skin. The better the blood flow, the skin looks healthier and glowing. Irrespective of your skin colour, you can always have a clear complexion.

The various factors that contribute for a healthy complexion are

  • Adhering to a healthy lifestyle
  • Doing exercise regularly
  • Having sleep hygiene
  • Eating right
  • Following a pure ayurvedic skin care regimen

ABBREVIATION

COPD – Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

In the current scenario of COVID-19, where most of us are forced to work from home, it can be tempting to spend whatever time we get to sit and relax on the couch. We might be living a sedentary lifestyle, wherein we are sitting, lying down and resting more than we are being active. This eventually will affect the health of our joints and increase our arthritis symptoms.

A joint is a part of the body where two or more bones meet to allow movement. When the range of movement is greater, the risk of injury is higher because the strength of the joint is reduced. Joint pain is caused by the wear and tear on the cartilage that protects and safeguards the joints.  Inflammation (pain and swelling), infection and injury are the common causes of joint pain.

SYMPTOMS AND RISK FACTORS

The common symptoms of Arthritis are joint pain and stiffness. Joint swelling and decreased range of movement are also present in many cases. No cure exists as it gradually worsens.

There are certain risk factors which are inevitable such as

  1. Heredity
  2. Age
  3. Gender
  4. Genetic factors

Only lifestyle changes like active life, eating right, maintaining healthy weights and effective treatments may help to prevent, improve joint function. Exercise plays an important role in slowing down the disease or preventing it.

Exercise helps to:

  1. Help maintain healthy joints.
  2. Relieve stiffness of joints.
  3. Reduces pain and fatigue.
  4. Increases muscle strength.
  5. Increase bone strength.

AYURVEDIC / HOME REMEDIES

Conventional treatments can help relieve joint pain but might not be a permanent cure. Here are some simple home remedies for quick relief:

Eucalyptus: The Eucalyptus oil relieves from the pain and swelling in the joints and at the same time its aroma has a calmative effect on the brain.

Ginger: Ginger known for its exceptional antiseptic properties helps reduce joint pain and swelling. It increases blood circulation. It also brings heat and healing properties to the affected areas. Drinking ginger tea or applying ginger paste on your joints helps.

Turmeric: Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric helps treat pain, inflammation and stiffness.

Heat therapy: Keeping a heating pad or hot water bottle up to 15-20 minutes or taking a warm shower or bath.

Therapeutic massage: Massage is given on the joints using herbal oils which provides significant relief from pain and swelling.

The above said quick remedies are for quick relief and not a permanent cure.

CONCLUSION

व्यायामात् लभते स्वास्थ्यं दीर्घायुष्यं बलं सुखं।

आरोग्यं परमं भाग्यं स्वास्थ्यं सर्वार्थसाधनम्॥

The above Sanskrit sloka says that exercising regularly results in good health, long life, strength and happiness. Good health is the greatest blessing.  Health is the means of everything.

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages. Pimples are small blisters mostly seen on the face, back, chest or shoulders.

According to Ayurveda, clear and glowing skin are considered as the hallmark of good health. Skincare involves keeping your skin clean and healthy. An effective routine can help prevent acne, treat wrinkles and help keep your skin looking its best.

WHY AM I GETTING ACNE?

  • Release of excess sebum

COVID-19 declared as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) is the disease caused by a new corona virus called SARS-CoV-2. There is no specific treatment or cure now. It is especially important to understand that social distancing and proper hygiene practices are necessary to protect ourselves from COVID-19.

“The idea is that if you don’t have a potent weapon to combat the enemy, a strong and effective shield is the best bet to protect yourself.” The question is how to build a strong immunity.

HOW TO BUILD IMMUNITY?

The COVID-19 crisis has led to high levels of psychological distress and significant impact on mental health. The immune system is the body’s multi-level defence network against potentially harmful bacteria, viruses, and other organisms. Keeping a robust immune system year-round is key to preventing infection and disease.

The factors that augment your immunity naturally are:

  • Get adequate sleep
  • Staying hydrated
  • Managing stress levels
  • A well-balanced diet
  • Include a variety of spices into the daily dietary routine.
  • A regular yoga practice/exercise

Few things that we can make part of our daily routine to strengthen immunity are:

  • Oil pulling before brushing your teeth in the morning to kill the germs and bacteria in the mouth.
  • Starting the day with Tulsi, pepper and ginger tea to strengthen and cleanse the upper respiratory tract.
  • Use turmeric and black pepper in the meals daily, to boost immunity and reduce toxins.
  • Deep throat gargling with salt water.
  • Minimizing intake of red meat and avoid usage of processed meats.
  • Taking 15 ml of Amla (gooseberry) juice daily to supply extra antioxidants.
  • Drinking plenty of warm water soothes the throat and nasal congestion.

AYURVEDIC HERBS TO BOOST IMMUNITY

Research has shown that supplementing with certain vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other substances can improve immune response and potentially protect against illness. Here is the list of some Ayurvedic herbs and spices that can help strengthen the immune system and improve overall health, thereby reducing the risk of contracting corona virus infection.

10Zingiber officinaleShuntiImproves taste and digestive strength, effectively treats chronic respiratory disorders.

IMMUNITY BOOSTING FOODS

While all the above-mentioned Ayurvedic herbs will help, it needs to be supplemented with the nutrients. Nutrients are compounds in foods essential to life and health, providing us with energy, the building blocks for repair and growth and substances necessary to regulate chemical processes.

There are six major nutrients:

  1. Carbohydrates (CHO),
  2. Lipids (fats),
  3. Proteins
  4. Vitamins
  5. Minerals and
  6. Water

Fibre is considered as a seventh nutrient essential for the human or animals.

Vitamins and minerals are essential to the health and the functioning of your immune system.

  • Vitamin D is essential for immune function. Healthy levels of this vitamin may help lower your risk of respiratory infections.
  • Vitamin C is vital for immune health. Supplementing with this nutrient may reduce the duration and severity of upper respiratory tract infections, including the common cold.
  • Along with vitamin D and C, magnesium and zinc are minerals which play a crucial role in carrying out the enzymatic processes in our body. Magnesium helps in converting vitamin D into its active usable form.

CONCLUSION

Making healthy lifestyle choices by consuming nutritious foods, getting adequate sleep, engaging in regular physical activity, exercise and not smoking are the most important ways to bolster your immune system. Ayurveda has enough potential and possibilities to be employed both for the prevention and an adjunct treatment option for COVID-19.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a modern-day scourge in women of reproductive age. PCOS can disrupt a woman’s menstrual cycles and make it harder to get pregnant. It can increase your risk for pregnancy complications and miscarriage. The root cause of this condition can be either a lifestyle habit or genetic. Obesity can be either a cause or an effect of PCOS. This aspect of PCOS is rather hard to understand or predict. Ultimately, PCOS is an emotionally distressing problem for women with various physical and physiological consequences.

Symptoms

The various symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Irregular periods or Skipped periods
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Mood swings
  • Cysts in Ovary
  • Obesity
  • Acne
  • Scanty scalp hair or loss of hair
  • Hair growth (hirsutism) – Excessive hair on the face and body
  • Insulin resistance leading to Diabetes
  • Darkening of the skin
  • Headaches

CAUSES:

The causes for PCOS can either be Lifestyle-related or genetic. There is really no scientific nor clinical clarity on the cause for PCOS. Some of the causes are:

  • High levels of male hormones preventing the ovaries from making eggs normally
  • Genes – studies have shown that PCOS runs in the family
  • Insulin Resistance – Sometimes the body is not able to “utilize” insulin optimally. This causes the body to signal for more insulin to be produced. Excess insulin triggers the ovaries to produce more male hormones
  • Inflammation – Women with PCOS have shown to have increased levels of inflammatory markers in their blood. Obese women in general are more prone to having high levels of inflammation

TREATMENT:

Treatment for PCOS usually starts with lifestyle changes like weight loss, diet, and exercise.

An effective treatment should:

  • Be effective in the management of PCOS both in adolescents and women of child bearing age.
  • Resolve Diabetic, Androgenic, Metabolic and Evictive (eviction of the cyst) issues that affect Ovulatory and Metabolic functions
  • Improve peripheral insulin sensitivity and normalizes weight in obese patients
  • Decrease Androgenic features – Normalizes hormonal balances
  • Improve ovulatory functions and stimulates ovulation.
  • Reduce cyst size and numbers
  • Restore hormonal balance
  • Regulate menstrual cycle
  • Promote overall health
  • Reset the body

The following ingredients have an excellent effect on the overall health of a woman as per the table given below:

“An expert Ayurvedic Doctor is one who knows all the benefits of Triphala! For, it is said in the Samhitas (classical text books) that there is NO DISEASE that Triphala can’t cure if used in the right ratio and in the right combination”.

TRIPHALA BENEFITS

A cursory search for Triphala on Google Scholar yields 31200 results. Indeed, Triphala is one of the most researched Ayurvedic formulations and rightly so. Benefits of Triphala include (but are not restricted to the following):

  1. Weight loss – Triphala when processed with the right herbal decoctions is an excellent tool in fighting obesity.
  2. Detoxifying – Triphala is very high in antioxidants. It’s touted for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral abilities, and it’s prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners for a wide variety of ailments.

  4. Oral health – A mouthwash made of Triphala works very well to prevent plaque and gingivitis. A bonafide toothpowder/toothpaste SHOULD contain triphala in order to be effective and give complete oral protection.
  5. Skin care – Triphala protects the epidermis and the dermal fibroblasts (which help in recovery from injury). Triphala also increases collagen production (which helps in reducing wrinkles). Triphala is also used to deal with skin conditions such as severe acne and eczema.
  6. Constipation – A spoon of Triphala with warm water or milk in the night functions as an excellent laxative. Gentle yet cleansing. Triphala is the most superior of laxatives without any side-effects.
  7. Diabetes – Triphala along with proper medical advice can help in regulation of blood sugar. Please remember this is NOT a stand-alone cure for high blood glucose levels
  8. Improves hair quality – Triphala also has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Applying a paste in your hair can help you get a squeaky clean scalp.
  9. Enhances vision – Triphala has ocular enhancing properties, which helps you enhance vision and also protects you from severe eye ailments such as cataract or glaucoma. This can be achieved by regular consumption of Triphala in any form. Doctors also prescribe Triphala water to cleanse eyes. However, you shouldn’t do so unless recommended by a bona fide Ayurvedic Doctor
  10. Liver Ailments – Triphala is an excellent support therapy for people with liver ailments.

However, there are more esoteric benefits of Triphala and that is beyond the scope of this blog article. Suffice it to say that the benefits of Triphala are innumerable and this wonderous formulation has untold positive effects on the body.

INGREDIENTS:

Triphala is made from three fruits of the myrobalans family – Amlaki (Phyllanthus emblica), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica).

Typically, those available most easily is the Triphala Churna made with the above three fruits in a ratio of 1:1:1. This is generally recommended as a rasayana (a rejuvenative) for the body.

However, the same three fruits can be combined in various ratios using various different decoctions for very different indications.

Each ratio in combination with a different anupana (accompanying medium to consume the Triphala. For example milk, honey, water, ghee etc are all examples of anupana) has a different effect on the body. THIS RATIO AND THE CORRESPONDING ANUPANA is where the Ayurvedic physician’s genius and acumen comes into the picture.

Suffice it to say that Triphala is indeed a wonderful formulation that can be used to address and cure plethora of diseases in the hands of a well-versed Ayurvedic Vaidya.

TRIPHALA SIDE EFFECTS

In the past, a child’s cuteness quotient was associated with how round or chubby he was. But in recent times, this cuteness quotient has been associated with a serious modern epidemic called Childhood Obesity (Sthaulya). This can be due to nutritional, genetic or lifestyle disorders. In Ayurveda, it is classified as Ahara (Diet), Vichara (Mental Status), Vihara (Routine) and Bijadosha(Hereditary). This disorder can spill into adulthood and cause other complications like diabetes, heart diseases, and other cardiovascular disorders. According to WHO, childhood obesity has increased by about 60% in the last 20 years.

Some children are genetically predisposed to being overweight. Studies have shown that an active lifestyle can shed about 40% of the fat, attributable to one’s genetic predispositions. The globalizing effect of the Internet and technology has made the world smaller, at the cost of our children leading more sedentary lifestyles.

Sedentary lifestyle along with unhealthy food is a dangerous combination for Childhood Obesity. Psychological factors can also play a big role in the child’s wellbeing and health. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle coupled with a nutritious diet can help shed that extra bulge.

A healthy kid’s countdown ‘5210’ was started in Maine (USA) to raise healthy children. Keeping in mind the unhealthy & demanding lifestyles of modern day children we have modified the steps a wee bit and call it the Jammi’s ‘5+2 0(1) 0’ plan.

5+: Take 5 helpings of fruits and vegetables a day. Need not limit it to 5.

2: Indulge in at least 2 hours of physical activity. Physical activity need not be about running a marathon. Make sure your kids start simply by taking the stairs instead of the elevator and have them do at least 30-minutes of moderate yet structured physical activity.

The most simple, basic and never followed the wisdom of nature is exercising the choice of food and lifestyle based on the changing rhythms of seasons. The juncture of every season brings along with it certain diseases and imbalances during its transition from one season to another. Ayurveda recommends, making right food choices based on the dominant dosha during that cycle. These doshas are responsible for the physical and emotional attributes in the human body. The combinations of these doshas within an individual determine the characteristics of that individual. Any imbalances in these doshas cause diseases. Just as every person is dominated by a dosha, every season is also dominated by a dosha. Therefore, it is very important to tune ourselves to the rhythms of nature by following season specific diet and activities in order to avoid imbalances. This goes a very long way in maintaining your body’s balance and harmony with nature.

Different doshas are dominant in different seasons. Vata is characteristic of fall and early winter (Mid July- Mid November). Falling temperatures demand the need for nourishing Ojas (Sanskrit word meaning vigor or strength) developing food. Therefore, it’s that time of the year when you need to keep yourself warm and binge on warm, well-cooked, organic, fresh foods. Some of the nourishing foods include lemons, ghee, sweet potatoes, apples (if you live in regions that produce apples locally) and almonds. Sip on plenty of warm water every half hour to eliminate impurities from the tissues.

Kapha characterizes late winters and early spring (Mid Nov- Mid March). Keep yourself warm by favoring detoxifying food with hot spices during this season. Spices like cinnamon, black pepper, ginger and cardamom help tackle the runny noses and sore throats that develop due to the cold temperatures. Go easy on heavy, fried, sweet and salty food. Do take some time to indulge in some sort of physical activity in order to keep oneself active.

Pitta signifies the onset of summers. The bright sunny weather makes you feel more energetic. However, the soaring temperature also kills your appetite. Beat the summer heat by consuming juicy, organic and cooling Pitta pacifying food. Include fresh seasonal fruits, rice, pulses and milk products in your diet. Water is the best for cooling Pitta. Hence, do not forget to keep yourself well hydrated.
